Bioluminescence – Soundscapes Volume 4

Divine Matrix returns with Volume 4 of his Soundscapes series of electronic music excursions. ‘Bioluminescence’ continues the theme in a more ambient, experimental style. There’s plenty of creativity though within this drifting, ethereal space music journey.

Steve is a master at creating ambient spaces populated with just the right amount of spaced out textures end effects. There are no drums or rhythms here, just gentle rhythmic motion supplied by delicate sequences.

The result is 9 tracks of varied, atmospheric spaced out ambient music with a darker, pulsating undertone. When rhythmic sequences do appear, they do so in an understated and gorgeously chilled out way. The stunningly beautiful “The Beauty in Things” epitomising the artist’s brilliance. Overall, this is an evocative and spaced out trip on the wings of expertly crafted ambient electronica.

Steve has always managed to conjure up electronic music with echoes of 70s and 80’s Tangerine Dream, but with a modern edge and full of surprises.

While ‘Bioluminescence’ isn’t a sequencer based album, it still harks back to the early days of electronic space music – indeed, spaced out Krautrock – with a feeling of deep distance and adventure beyond the cosmos. Stunning!

CThis album is available as a duplicated CD in cardboard wallet and as 16bit mp3, flac or apple lossless and 24bit flac and apple lossless. Check out our FAQ page for more information.

Because I don’t have the details to hand, I presume that this is the work of a certain Steve Barnes, in which case, I tip my hat to you Mr Barnes, for you have created a whole new take on cosmic electronic music.
The 10 tracks on this album last between 5 and 8 minutes, but as you become more and more immersed in the vast depths of synths and electronics that unfolds, time becomes almost irrelevant. It kicks off with “Dinoflagellates” as watery sounds accompany a huge cloud of space music, layers appearing right across the musical spectrum, as the track billows out and fills the void, a bit like Iasos doing “Aqua”. Following on, is “Anglerfish” and, although it’s rhythm and melody free cosmic music, there is so much happening within the vastness. All the time, you hear new textures being added, ebbing and flowing, as swathes of space music move effortlessly across the universe in positively hypnotic fashion. But, like the American cosmic melodic musicians such as Braheny (in particular), Stearns, Danna & Clement and Roach, with whom this whole album shares a human touch, this is emotional music for the soul as much as the heart and the head.
The 7 and a half minute “Fireflies” slowly reveals its array of space synths for the first half of the track, only for a simple almost percussive electronic rhythm to appear to take the whole thing to a fade, as the 7 and a half minute “Waitomo Caves” takes its place, opening with ringing synth tones, an almost guitar like electronic chord structure that echoes and wafts airily upwards, all the time with the vast but subtle army of cosmic backdrops, shimmering away in the background. The ringing “guitar” chords continue slowly as, all around, the cosmic magic changes shape and drifts to perfection.
“Moon Jellies” possesses a distant bed of echoed rhythm to add to the infinite horizons of synths that evolve throughout, while “Milky Seas” evokes the majesty of the finest Iasos compositions, only with more of an edge and more movement at the bass end of the spectrum, but two compositions that are truly out of this world.
Four further tracks continue the process in spellbinding fashion, the overall result being one of the most essential listening space music albums to come out in many a long while and one to add to the so-called giants of cosmic music past.

Divine Matrix is the project of one Steve
Barnes, a synthesist working in the kind of lush
“chill out” ambient type of vein. As such, the
mood of BIOLUMINESCENCE is both bright
and mysterious, with obvious influences from
the techno field, yet with a music that’s largely
devoid of rhythms and mostly reliant on
melodic hooks and some occasional use of
sequences. In fact, the first six tracks are all
about restraint, whereas (track 7) Photophore
has a sequencer line during its liveliest section
that both recalls Tangerine Dream and Steve
Roach. That’s followed by Strange Creatures
one of the album’s darkest pieces, and then the
contrasting serene and heavenly The Beauty In
Things, after which the album comes to a close
with the Vangelis and Ian Boddy like grandiose
melodies of Fungi. In all it’s quite a nice one,
albeit more for those with a taste for sweeter
    synth sounds.

Apple  iOS up to and including iOS 8 won’t download zip files in Safari. The easiest way around this is to download the zip files onto a computer and then open the zip and transfer the tracks into iTunes (just drag the folder onto the iTunes icon in the dock). Then sync the iOS device to iTunes in the normal way.

Alternatively, there are apps in the Apple App store that will open zip files directly on your iOS device (iPhone/iPad).
